The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) top leadership has instructed its Eastern Cape structures to table a motion of no confidence against Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Athol Trollip, saying it will vote for an ANC candidate instead.
The EFF leadership met in Cape Town this week and decided on the motion of no confidence against Trollip after the DA opposed a motion to expropriate land without compensation.
In his state of the nation debate speech, EFF leader Julius Malema warned that “anyone who opposes expropriation without compensation is an enemy of our people”
On Tuesday DA MPs charged that the motion to expropriate was simply not possible. But the motion passed with 241 votes in the national assembly.
But the red berets fall out with the DA dates back to early 2017, when Malema accused Trollip of being a bully and controlling the metro despite the DA taking control of the council through a coalition with the United Democratic Movement (UDM) and votes from the EFF.
On Tuesday night EFF deputy president Flloyd Shivambu confirmed that his party’s councillors would vote with the ANC “if it presented a credible candidate”.
With the EFF’s 6 seats, the ANC would need to secure 2 more votes to add to its 40 seats, in order to take control back from the DA, which holds 46 seats.
