Human excrement smeared on walls of UKZN Pietermaritzburg lecture halls

Protesters at the Pietermaritzburg campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) smeared human excrement on the walls of several lecture halls on Monday night.

UKZN spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said officials from the risk management unit got cleaning staff to remove the mess today.

“I don’t have words to describe this. It’s unimaginable that someone who studies at a university can really carry human excrement instead of books and smear it in a classroom.
It’s shocking.”

Seshoka said, however, that lectures at all four campuses were taking place as normal.

Meanwhile, protests around the country sparked by demands for fee-free education have forced the closure of several institutions.

The Durban University of Technology announced that its campuses will be closed today and tomorrow following violent protests. It was expected to re-open on Thursday.
