Nigeria’s New Smart National Identity Card (NSNIC) has been declared as compliant with the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), meaning it will serve as a travel document when it is launched and issued.

An independent test showed the card has all the security details for individual profiling and identification.

Abdulhamid Umar, deputy director of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), told journalists at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, the Card Personalisation Facilities (CPF) had passed the User Acceptance Test (UAT), which was followed closely by the successful testing and validation of the EuroMasterVisa (EMV) compliance testing.

“The test showed that the new National Identity Smart Card could be used at points of sale (PoS) and ATM machines for transactions currently available on the conventional ATM cards,” he said.
