THE death toll from this week’s violence in Tshwane has risen to five, after two bodies were found by police in Mabopane.
Police spokesperson Col Noxolo Kweza said: “One body was found in (Mabopane) mall while the other was found at a nearby house.”
Since Monday‚ the Tshwane municipality has been engulfed by violent protests following the ANC’s decision to put forward former public works minister Thoko Didiza as its mayoral candidate for the metro.
Residents have been blockading roads‚ burning trucks and buses, and demanding that mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa retain his position.
The violence turned ugly when protesters started looting foreign-owned shops in Atteridgeville‚ Mamelodi‚ Garankuwa‚ Hammanskraal and Mabopane.
The national government‚ the ANC and police have condemned the violence. More than 50 people have been arrested in connection with the violence so far.
